She called them "long-tailed rats." During the 2000 race, she listened to news reports about John McCain confessing to dalliances that caused his first marriage to fall apart after he came back from his stint as a POW in Vietnam. I figured, given her stringent moral standards, that her great affection for McCain would be dimmed. "So," I asked her, "what do you think of that?" "A man who lives in a box for five years can do whatever he wants," she replied matter of factly. I was startled, but it brought home to me what a powerful get-out-of-jail-free card McCain had earned by not getting out of jail free. His brutal hiatus in the Hanoi Hilton is one of the most stirring narratives ever told on the presidential trail — a trail full of heroic war stories. It created an enormous credit line of good will with the American people. It also allowed McCain, the errant son of the admiral who was the commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific during Vietnam — his jailers dubbed McCain the "Crown Prince" — to give himself some credit. Stand Up for Veterans Update More Info June 19, 2008 National Journal: “Veterans Ask for an Advance” The National Journal ran a story outlining DAV’s legislative proposal for VA funding reform. “For years, veterans groups have argued, in vain, for making veterans health care funding automatic, as it is for Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare. In recent months, however, a coalition led by the 1.4 million-member Disabled American Veterans has switched tactics. Instead of seeking politically unpalatable mandatory funding, the group is proposing that VA health care be funded through an obscure legislative mechanism called ‘advance appropriations.’” Women Veterans’ Summit to Be Held June 20-22 DAV is one of the co-sponsors of the National Summit on Women Veterans’ Issues, which is scheduled for this weekend. The summit will evaluate progress on issues of concern to the women veterans’ community. Following the summit, recommendations will be developed to ensure the quality of care for women veterans in the future. AP: “Study Sees Discrepancies in VA Care for Men, Women” The Associated Press reported on a new VA study showing that female veterans are not receiving the same quality of care as men in about a third of the VA outpatient-care facilities. Part of the solution, says the report, is for the VA to hire more physicians trained in women's care. About the Stand Up for Veterans Initiative Stand Up for Veterans is an initiative of the Disabled American Veterans, an organization of 1.3 million disabled veterans who are focused on building better lives for disabled veterans and their families. The initiative seeks to find public policy solutions for all veterans, particularly those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, who have incurred devastating injuries and disabilities, including traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder and other psychological wounds of war.
